My local area connection doesnt want to work on my laptop?

Ok i have a Dell Inspiron 6000.

When i am at my boyfriends house and he connects the wire from his router to my modem it connects perfectly. Then, i come home and connect the wire from my internet box to my modem and it doesnt work at all. My boyfriend has Time Warner Cable and uses a wireless rounter box when using the cable, i also have time warner cable but use the black box time warner gave me with my cable. My laptop can tell when i connect the wire but doesnt connect to the internet.

When i view the details for my laptops connection it says:

IP Address: 169.254.0.248

Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0

it doesnt even list as many categories as my pc, when my pc is connected through the wire it works and says:

again retryMy local area connection doesnt want to work on my laptop?
is it set to automatically obtain IP information, or do you have it setup static..

169.... addresses are private, and usually done when connecting two computers, try to automatically obtain IPs if that isnt checked.
right click on network addapter and click repair

it will renew the ip address

your network is working fine as i see

go to ru nn - cmd

then type :ipconfig /release

try again :ipconfig /renew
